The governing body of FoCM is the council, whose first meeting was held at the FoCM'97 conference at Rio de Janeiro. The meeting was open although, of course, only council members were allowed to vote. As things stand, membership of the council comprises the following categories:
- Members of the FoCM executive committee;
- Two representatives of the local organising committee of the FoCM conference;
- All workshop organisers at the FoCM conference;
- Subject organisers at the forthcoming special semester on "Foundations of computational mathematics" at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute, Berkeley (CA) and at a second special semester which is currently in an advanced stage of planning.
