The Foundations of Computational Mathematics Conference of 1997
was held in the Instituto de Matemática Pura e Aplicada
(IMPA), an outstanding research centre, spectacularly located on the edge
of a tropical forest in the beautiful city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil,
during the week of January 5-12. There were more than 140
participants, distributed into nine different workshops and twelve
plenary talks.
The ambiance of the conference was very friendly, with lots of
discussion between the participants. The organisers took great care
of the participants from the moment of their arrival until the very
departure, and there were no problems of security at all, despite
the reputation of the city. Special thanks for this are due to two
of the local organizers, Gregorio Malajovich and Jorge
Zubelli, and to the staff of the IMPA, who worked particularly
hard for the success of the conference in all its aspects.
During the meeting, the Best Paper Award of the Journal
of Complexity was awarded to Pascal Koiran, from the Ecole
Normale Supérieure of Lyon, for his paper entitled "Hilbert
Nullstellensatz is in the polynomial hierarchy"
The Rio de Janeiro Foundations of Computational Mathematics
Conference was sponsored by
IMPA and it was held in cooperation with
SIAM.
